Rocky Mountain Nationals - Sunday Report

Less than seven days after the completion of Doorwarz 11 and the quickest field in the history of the West Coast Pro Mods, Sunday’s eliminations for the 20th annual Rocky Mountain Nationals did not disappoint, featuring multiple close races and upsets.

In the 1 vs 8 matchup of the first round, number one qualifier Mike Gondziola raced Jay Syvertsen, with Mike struggling with traction and Jay running his quickest pass of the weekend with a 4.203, but had gone -0.219 red to give the win to Gondziola.

The biggest upset of the first round was Toni Moretto running his career quickest ET and fastest MPH, with a 3.939 at 186.8 MPH blast to defeat perennial front runner Garrett Richards.

Steve Horne and Steve Goddard faced off in the quarters as well, where Goddard’s 4.093 with a .042 reaction time was bested by Steve Horne’s 3.940 with a .150 reaction time, with a razor thin margin of victory of 0.045 seconds.

The semi finals saw Jordie Lazic and his 3.888 get by Steve Horne and his 3.950, and in the other semifinal the all-nitrous pedalfest saw Mike Gondziola and his 4.762 beat Toni Moretto and his 4.859.

In the final round, Jordie Lazic claimed his second win (and his third final round appearance) in the first three races of the 2023 season to take a commanding lead in the 2023 WCPM Championship.
